We took off for New York City last Wednesday evening to attend a family wedding. The wedding was a family event held on Saturday in beautiful Westchester, NY. To make a long story short… the wedding was a tummy warming event. As for myself the real story was the fact that I have never been to New York or any of the 5 boroughs. And being a city faring kind of fellow I was thrilled to be visiting such a fantastic place.
We were confined to Manhattan (a great place to be “stuck” in) as we only had a couple days to explore. With family in tow and wife dropping bombs of New York knowledge (she’s been to the “Big Apple” plenty of times) we made sure to see as much as possible. But when all was said and done… two measly days was not enough to see much of anything but a couple highlights. Sure we were able to see tons from the top of a double-decker tour bus, walking around, and speak to folks. But come on… there is so much to see and do there. And not just “do” but to experience, taste, touch, and smell. I want more.
We ate out… we rode in plenty of stir crazy taxi cabs (they don’t drive fast, they fly low and well I might add), we visited historical monuments, had fun in museums, drank deep, and fattened up our waist lines. There was standard shopping, window shopping, and site seeing. It was all a big jumble of “let’s get here, do that, eat this, jump in the cab, and go do this.” We didn’t take a break unless to sleep in the hotel. It was a mad dash of short time in the city. It was GREAT!
I/we will go back again. We must. Manhattan is such a fun place to visit. I can’t wait to go back and visit the other 4 boroughs that I missed. In such a whirlwind, one (four) can only do so much. But we did a bunch which left a bunch of “wanting to stay longer” in my head.
New York… New York… I can’t wait to visit you again. The people, the traffic, the architecture, the food. It was awesome. Now I understand why well-traveled New Yorkers claim that San Francisco is a town compared to New York City. The place is massive.
